Elvis Presley’s Granddaughter All Grown Up: Riley Keough in Jack and Diane

Elvis Presley would be proud that his offspring has some acting chops as Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter (with musician Danny KeoughRiley Keough, along side Juno Temple, star in Jack and Diane.
There is talk that this film, which debuts at Tribeca Film Festival this week, is a coming of age love story between two young girls with a dose of something monstrous mixed in (rumoured to be werewolfesque). Written by Bradley Rust Gray and distributed by Magnolia Films, the following is the description from the film’s official site:

Jack and Diane, two teenage girls, meet in New York City and spend the night kissing ferociously. Diane’s charming innocence quickly begins to open Jack’s tough skinned heart. But when Jack discovers that Diane is moving she pushes her away. Unable to grasp her new feelings, Diane’s emotions begin to cause unexplainable violent changes to her body. Through these awkward and insecure feelings, the two girls must struggle to turn their first love into an enduring one.

Wow, certainly not your typical Girl Talking Clam Bake with a Nun played by Mary Tyler Moore kind of movie that used to come out of that family by way of Grampa Elvis!

Riley has certainly earned her way in show business, not capitalizing on her famous roots by sticking a Presley hyphen into her name. Now 23, she made her screen debut in The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, and has appeared in a few other films, including the Good Doctor with Orlando Bloom, which was her first lead role.

Headlines were made recently, when it was announced that Riley Keough was engaged to fellow actor and popular British heartthrob Alex Pettyfer, who can be seen next in the much anticipated male stripper flick Magic Mike along side Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum; holy abs a plenty coming our way.

Check out this clip for Jack and Diane (Riley Keough is Jack with short dark hair):

China Censors Kate Winslets Breasts For Titanic 3D Release

Categories: Hardly News

Although it must be strange for her 15 years after she ‘released the hounds’, the phrase ‘Kate Winslet’s breasts’ is a pretty common Search Engine term of late thanks to China, since James Cameron’s re-release of his highly acclaimed blockbuster Titanic 2012 in 3D.

1 day after the new Titanic 3D extravaganza was released in theatres across China, 10 million took to Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter equivelant, to discuss the controversy they faced with the removal of, to put it bluntly, Kate Winslet’s breasts. One micro-blogger, as reported by IBtimes, vented their displeasure with this catchy and much repeated sentiment:

“I’ve been waiting almost 15 years, and not for the 3D icebergs,”

The scene in question is the one in which Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), sketches Rose in the nude (Kate Winslet), but in China, the scene has been altered so that the actress’ bare breasts are not shown.
What possible reason could there be for such a meaty part of the film (Sorry Kate for the expression) being cut? Well it seems a ridiculous one, that’s what, explained poorly by an official at China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television:

“Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing,” …. “We’ve decided to cut off the nudity scenes.”

What if it were a man on screen, would the same rules prevail? Let’s just hope Jason Segel doesn’t re-release Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 3D, because half the movie would be omitted in China if it were the other way around (there is an AWFUL lot of Jason Segel showing in this movie in case you missed it). Ahhhhh Censorship, you really make things upside down and backwards don’t you.

Titanic’s re-release is bringing about quite a few interesting snippets on the web. Like the post at Houston Press, discouraged by the flood of internet buzz that there exists in the younger generation a few cases documented who didn’t know Titanic was actually based on a real event. Seriously? Do parents and grandparents not have conversations with their offspring anymore? See tweet sheet below courtesy of Virgin Radio Vancouver with some of the chatter and proof in writing that there are actually people out there who don’t realize we just marked the 100 yrs anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Titanic on April 15th this past week.

from Virgin Radio Vancouver

Another fun one last week was a radio interview James Cameron did with morning talk show hosts Nat and Drew from Virgin Radio Vancouver, in it they peppered James with questions at the end in quiz format. A few highlights below:
Virgin Radio: There is only one copy of Titanic and Avatar left in the world, which one would you choose to save:
JC: “That is an awfully hypothetical situation…it’s like Sophie Choice….that is an unfair question and I refuse to answer.”
Virgin Radio: Who are you cheering for James Cameron, in the Stanley Cup:
JC: “That’s hockey right?”
Virgin Radio: Finish this lyric to “My Heart will Go On” Once more you open the door and your here……:
JC:”Ahhhhhmmm, I don’t know, what is it?”
Virgin Radio: In my heart…you should know this…
JC: “I didn’t write the damn thing!”

Do you think China should have sensored Kate Winslet like that? Do you think James Cameron should be better versed at his Celine Dion lyric trivia? Do you think Titanic was just a movie? Or whatever you are thinking, leave a comment below…
Looper is Time Travelling Thrill Ride Starring Joseph Gordon Levitt

Categories: Hardly News

Looper, the futuristic action thriller, out September 28th, 2012, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt.

This movie looks to be mind-spinning time travel fun. When the mob wants you rubbed out and disposed of without a trace, they send you back in time 30 yrs, to Gordon-Levitt, the young hitman called a Looper. He receives his victims, hooded and bound, ready for assination and discarding. The action in this film really accelerates when the victim is him – his future self, played by Bruce Willis.

Gordon-Levitt spent three hours each day in the make-up chair to tranform into the younger version of Willis. The likeness is uncanny.

First came the vignette, a studio gimmick for promoting the trailer. The vignette is a brief intro to Looper featuring writer/director Rian Johnson and its star Gordon-Levitt. Then came the teaser to the trailer, the trailer’s trailer if you will, a handful of shots from Looper to give us a taste of the action, and finally the actual trailer which of course are the best bits of the movie strung together to reveal sometimes way too much in a 2 minute clip, in the case of Looper though, it looks as unique and ambitious as movies such as Blade Runner and The Matrix.

The release of the online movie trailer has become an event unto itself. The studios marketing heads are running ad campaigns leading us all through the hoops, breeding a new strain of anticipation for moviegoers to yearn for the next scrap of meat to be flung our way. For more on the online trailer manipulation read the LA Times piece on the subject.

The Dictator Moves its Release Date to Make Way for Depp Burton Dark Shadows

The threat of the Johnny Depp / Tim Burton Duo has forced the Paramount pictures release of the comedy The Dictator back to May 16th, 2012 to avoid competing with Dark Shadows which will reach cinemas on May 11, 2012. Leaving the release of The Avengers, out on May 4th, as the heavyweight competition for the Dark Shadows box office dollars.

Dark Shadows will be teaming Depp and Burton for the eighth time in this campy tongue in cheek soap opera. Along with Depp, it will also star Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, and Eva Green as Anjelique Bouchard.

Depp’s character is the vampire patriarch, Barnabas Collins, who is transported from the 1700′s to the 1970′s, and is based on the character and premise of the truly weird T.V. series Dark Shadows, an ABC cult favourite soap which ran from 1966, airing 1225 episodes before it went off the air in 1971.

Burton has woven together a talented cast to bring us the big screen version of this clever supernatural soap – throw in his usual grey tones with punches of colour and whimsy and we should see the Burton magic once again in Dark Shadows. Can’t wait.

During a recent interview with Kara Warner of MTV News, Depp said his inspiration for his character Barnabas Collins comes from:

“The memory I have of watching the show as a kid – you know Jonathan Frid, and what he did with the character, was the main inspiration for sure”, Depp added “I adore Dracula, I adore Bella Lugosi, I adore Christopher Lee, I adore Nosferatu, I adore all the wonderful horror films.”

Horror films are not the only thing in Depp’s life he adores. His children Lily Rose and Jack are clearly the apples of his eye. Catching up with David Letterman recently while promoting Dark Shadows, Depp talked about his daughter being a teenager now and boasted as a proud papa:

She is quite astonishing, I am in big trouble.

Letterman then asked Johnny:

“What if she says to you: “I have spent 14 years admiring your body art”, what will you do Johnny?”

Depp quipped back:

“My fear is that she will bring someone home and that she has been admiring his body art, that is my fear.”

So we await with baited breath the arrival of yet another Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration, not to mention the seventh Burton/Bonham Carter partnering (real life shack up as well with 2 little ones). To build the anticipation even further, here is the official trailer for Dark Shadows.
